Words from the Workbench

When it comes to household repairs, I’m the kind of guy who does everything himself.  This tendency seems to grow from a combination of thrift and the thought that “I can figure this out”.  Over the years I have tackled projects in just about every trade – carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, HVAC.. you get the idea.  My father was the same way.  He was the “old country” type.  If something broke, you just… fixed it.  You called a repair guy only after you completely screwed it up, which happened sometimes.  But usually, a little mechanical common sense and some raw material like a paper clip or piece of a coffee can lid would do the trick.  As I’ve gotten older, I have learned that some things are better off left to professionals.  Replacement of the roof on my house is one of them.
